Volume 1 Talk 3
Coombe Springs, England June 30, 1957

( The recording begins abruptly. )

...so that human beings, together with the body, don't come to nothing; so that it doesn't happen that while one's alive in this world one does this with the body, one does that, one takes it there, one brings it here, and one can do nothing without it; but after death, this goes to the North Pole ( laughter ), this to the South Pole, and this to Africa ( laughter ). Then, when the person arrives before God, God will have to ask, 'Who's this?' because the complete form of a human being will be lacking.

Anyway, my children, you certainly hope that what arrives in heaven is more than just one of your ears. Or, perhaps, more than just your nose. If you can get to heaven, let it be the whole of you, complete with your understanding, so that you can really feel what conditions are like there.

For that reason, what all of you, my children, have received is not a teaching given by one person to another; Bapak isn't teaching it; Bapak isn't giving you lessons, my children; Bapak's only opening you and saying, 'Here it is, my child, the way that's right for you.' After that, it's up to you yourselves to choose your own walking stick. Will you choose a fine one? Will you choose a bad one? It's enough for Bapak that he has opened the way.

And on that way, it's God who will give you really useful lessons. For example, a person won't learn colloquial English really well unless an English person has been the teacher, and the lessons have been given ( here ) in England, too. How can a person teach human beings in such a way as to get people into heaven, when the teacher is in the world? The teacher can say, 'Really, heaven is truly blissful. All the food is delicious.'

But if it's asked, 'Have you been there yourself?.' 'Not yet.' How can people believe? The teacher's only saying that ( inaudible )ˇ

. . . to the second wall, the wall of the feelings. And if that can be completed, it will penetrate further to the third level, what Bapak calls the wall of the body of the understanding. And if that's completed, only then will it penetrate to the fourth wall, what Bapak calls the wall of awareness of human life. Only after you're there, my children - if we compare it with people sitting - can you sit in one row with the greatness of the power of God, which has been present there all the time.

Only then will the perfect human force of man be able to understand, able to feel properly, what the living power of God is like, the power present within everything that's within, so that belief in the One God will no longer be strange to you. For the power of God can be confirmed, can be known, only by human beings if they are already perfect. This is because the sight, hearing, sense of smell, speech and feelings will no longer be closed off by forces below the human level. So, my children, you'll see the power of God later; it will no longer be possible for ( your sight ) to be shut off by the walls in front of you. It will no longer be possible for it to be hidden from you by your closed-off eyes, and so, in your quietness, it will appear .... ( inaudible )ˇ

. . .with the result that humankind has been moved, or driven, from the proper place and is occupying what is called the coarse body. This calls for movements and life, so that these movements, and the moving in various ways, can demolish, can clear away, all the errors, all the staining, experienced in life, as well as those passed down from the ancestors That's a very heavy burden on all of you, my children.

Because with this perfection that all of you will obtain, provided these errors can be restrained, the consequences will be the overcoming, the putting an end to, all the staining, all the mistakes, that have come to you from the first generation to this one, so that your descendants will become true human beings really possessing genuine human qualities. Besides having the feeling of liking to help their fellow human beings, they'll be devoted to the One God and know what their life really is, as well as the way to live in this world and also in the hereafter. For this reason Bapak hopes that you won't become bored by the training ( latihan ), that you won't start losing interest in the latihan ( inaudible ).

ˇ . .it's not thinking, having one's thoughts roaming all over the place, even thinking, 'Oh, my housekeeping money's not going to be enough. I'm sure it'd be a mistake to buy that. That's what I'll buy!' There are those who say in the mosque, 'God, I prostrate myself before you,' and their thoughts are floating all around, because their bills haven't been paid, or for other reasons. In this way all of you, my children, will do the training ( latihan ) so that you come to have your hearts and minds pointing in one direction, in the direction of God.

( Testing )

Please receive again. Just receive in a sitting position. There's no need to move your whole body. 'My body moves to the right, moves up to the left, returns to the right, goes back to the left.

Now both right and left are moving.'

( Testing )

Finish. How was it? Did you receive it?

So, what was said was felt in all the body's movements, meaning that the left and right sides of your bodies recognize the 'I,' with the result that a human being's behavior will eventually become good in character, because of a good education and because of being filled with a human soul ( jiwa ) free from dependence on desires that want to harm other people.

This is the use of what all of you, my children, receive when you do the training ( latihan ), so that, when the process of what you are receiving is complete, you'll become able to have descendants from truly human seed, and also become able to provide a channel for them to be given a commensurately high education in the outward way, so that the children will finally become human beings who are useful and valuable creatures of God in human society, with the result that peace and prosperity may come to the family of mankind in this world ( inaudible )...

As for the latihan ( exercises ) that you ladies have been receiving, it's actually not correct to call them exercises; it's just that it has become our custom to use that expression. What would really be more correct would be to call them receiving latihan, for receiving everything that our lives require. Why does Bapak say 'receiving' or 'to receive. Because it is only God who can give all of you ladies something real rather than something stimulated by the mind.

For this reason in the training ( latihan ), if you're receiving and then you start thinking of this and that, at that time, well, the receiving in the training of all of you, my children, will stop. That's the reason why in order to receive the latihan properly you should not use your hearts and minds ( inaudible ).

. . .that the human being who can be said truly to see is the one who has already been shown the heavens which extend in tiers, what are called the heavenly bodies. Only then is it possible to feel for the first time truly what God's gifts are like, what God's love of mankind is like, and how noble the life of the true human being is, for then there can no longer be found anything that's distant, anything that's difficult, because God will have brought whatever is far, in front of you, and God will also have made it easy to find everything you need to find. For this reason, the prophets have advised, 'Believe in God's existence and His power, and follow the messengers God has sent' ( inaudible ).

The training ( latihan ) that you've been receiving, my children, is a necessary condition for limiting, for putting an end to, all the errors and mistakes experienced by your ancestors up to and including your own generation. These have in very truth caused you to have gone not just astray, but very far astray ( inaudible ).

That's why in religion it's very strictly forbidden to put one's faith in stones, in places regarded as holy, or in anything other than human beings, for surely human beings have to be given guidance by none other than human beings, since they have the same form and the same ancillary forces, too. Likewise the practice of trusting in animals is also said to be wrong. Because, if people really worship animals, when they finally die they'll inevitably become animals too.

Thus it's clear that the advice of the prophets, who were also human beings . . . ( inaudible ).

( The interpreter says, 'Only when that happens can you be enabled to live in accordance with the true way destined for the ideal human being,' then Bapak is heard saying: ) . . .a way of life that is truly one ( that goes in harmony ) with the human soul ( jiwa ) and which is without disturbances of any kind. So it's clear that what's received in the training ( latihan ) of all of you, my children, is preparation within you to enable all of you to take the way of life leading in the direction of... ( inaudible ).

( Interpreter: ' . . . represents a preparation for you to be enabled to go towards the truth...' ) . . . not to mention ( in the direction of ) knowing where the power of God is. This is a matter that will become very easy later when the preparations within the inner feeling of all of you, my children, have been brought to the stage where you're really ready.

This can be exemplified as your wanting to go on a journey. You will be ready with whatever supplies you will need on the journey, so that you can bring into reality what you've planned m your minds. This will be different from the former way of preparing for a journey, because the destination is very far away, and so it takes a long time to get there, with the possibility, too, of getting lost, of wandering here and there, and never reaching one's journey's end.

These are the broad outlines of the aims of the training ( latihan ). Why is it that after receiving what you receive in the latihan, only the aspects that are outward in nature are touched, those which give rise to movements in a person? Because this is really needed so that the coarse body, the channel for the entry of subhuman forces accompanying humankind, will be purified from... ( inaudible. From the interpreter's words it can be concluded that Bapak is comparing the life forces to the various parts of a house. )

This force is the companion of mankind with the name daya kebendaan ( the material force ) .... ( inaudible ).

( The interpreter speaks of 'the foundation of the house.' ) ˇ . .and the part of the house represented by the walls is that to which Bapak gives the name planten ( vegetable force ), while the other components, which are of a higher level than the walls, Bapak uses to exemplify the animal force, daya hewani. The roof tiles and other things above this represent the force called the ordinary human force, namely daya jasmani. A house that's complete, with an inside and outside, for example with all the components in place, represents the perfect human being Bapak spoke of, who has reached the stage where the influence or pressure of the subhuman forces automatically departs from the places where they shouldn't be.

Those forces will go away from the wrong places and go to their right places, that is the places that are right or suitable in accordance with the original hierarchy of forces, where what was willed by the One God was willed by human beings .... ( inaudible ).

( Interpreter says, 'And one does not feel regret if one takes what belongs to another or even kills other human beings.' ) The behavior of such a person is like that because the inner feeling has been oppressed by the subhuman forces - the material, vegetable and animal - making the person show delight in harming others or killing fellow human beings, making the character as savage as an animal's. Such forces cannot be cleaned out of mankind's inner feeling except with the help of Almighty God, that is to say the One God, by means of the way that enables... ( inaudible ).

( Interpreter: ' . . .which can occur when man truly surrenders himself.' ) . . .also because God is the One God and Almighty and precedes all that is first and will outlast all that is last, and envelops the whole universe and all visible and invisible creatures, and is also deep within everything that's within ( inaudible ). (I nterpreter: ' . . .so that you may be able to receive in a pure and unadulterated form whatever is given to you.' )

Bapak would like to continue his explanation of the spiritual path. Actually this discussion is supposed to be a continuation of Bapak's explanations earlier but because among you ladies are many who came in after Bapak had begun speaking and didn't hear Bapak's previous clarifications about what has become resident in human beings after they have been occupied by the ancillary forces . . . ( inaudible ).

Therefore, in such conditions it is not unusual for there to be human beings who act and behave and make movements in a manner that does not resemble the behavior of a true human being, who behave savagely in their lives with other human beings, who are incapable of experiencing pity for their fellow creatures, who feel no remorse if they reduce the well-being of others or kill other human beings ( inaudible ).

. . .it's fitting that such a one be trusted. But there are limits to such trust, because that's a human being. That's not God, it's only a person who shows the way, an intermediary who shows the way, the right direction, the direction that can lead to the truth. Such was the advice of the prophets, and it's this, too, that all of you, my children, have received.

If, for the sake of clarity, Bapak repeats what he said, it was that the wall of the coarse body is what Bapak calls the first wall - the feelings in the flesh and blood covering the whole self. The second is the wall Bapak calls the wall of the feelings, or the will and spirit to live or work; it's something in the human body that Bapak says is in the secret of human life ( the sex organ ). And the third wall is in the hati sanubari ( the inner heart ), and the fourth wall is in the human head.

Why must all of them be purified? So that your entire way of sensing, your entire way of walking, your entire way of feeling, your entire way of understanding, your entire way of being aware of your life, will become the way of a true human being. In line with the indications already given by God, your lives will no longer be the way of human beings filled with subhuman forces. And God will give you something that is appropriately adapted to the strength of each of you, my children. It will not exceed the strength of each of you, so that in the end you'll be able to proceed m a balanced manner, all parts working together.

Nor will you have to reduce your worldly obligations. The result will be that you'll be able to do the things mankind has to do in the world - what you've been doing on a day-to-day basis - but you won't forget the worship of the One God, because the behavior and actions of all of you will have been filled with the power of the One God ( inaudible )ˇ

( Interpreter: 'But it's oneself that must receive. The book wasn't received from God.' )

In that way it's clear .... ( inaudible)

( Interpreter: 'One must have proof as the basis.' )

ˇ . .for Bapak himself, Bapak has been able to receive this, to come here, and can describe these things, but not because of studying. Nor is it from me myself. It's that I really accept what God gives, as you will when you receive it.

If earlier I'd had an education in engineering and become a teacher, I'd teach engineering If I'd obtained my spiritual knowledge, for example, on a riverbank or on the seashore, when you receive it, you'd also have to receive it the way Bapak did. But if you should ask at this moment how Bapak was at the time of receiving this ( inaudible )ˇ

The guide who is right for you is God's messenger who is also like all of you. What's the reason God's messengers are human beings too? Because God doesn't want to estrange human beings from one another, and also because human beings have to trust one another. It shouldn't reach the point where human beings believe in something other than human beings, because if they do, it means they believe in superstition ( inaudible ).

. . .in broad outline, on what is given content in the latihan and what the aim is of the latihan that all of you have received. The explanations that Bapak has been providing can more or less be considered sufficient for the time being, for this evening, and they'll be continued later during the coming days.

Now, besides resting a while, Bapak would like to test how far the receiving of all of you, my children, has gone, and how it is. Yes, take a break. Take a break.

( Testing )

My child; come here, my child. What you said to God was able to reach Him! And there was an answer, which ( inaudible ).

( The interpreter says: 'God has not caused man to have these accessory forces so that they should be a trouble to him...' )

. . .but to provide all of you with strength, my children, and the ability to stand up and fill your place as true human beings. If Bapak illustrates this with the example of a house, then the perfection of a house is certainly not only in its roof tiles and its walls, but also its base, its foundation ( inaudible ).

What all of you have received, my children, or obtained, is really the key to all the things that Bapak said earlier, with the result that you will on your own be able to go forward receiving this perfectly in your inner feeling ( inaudible ).
