( First part of recording missing ) ...this is also what the people over there in Europe are afraid of. Bapak will tell you. In Coombe Springs, in London, before Bapak went there and before Subud arrived, it happened a lot that this one here was looking at somebody over there and that one there was looking over here - that happened a lot. Without doubt a lot of them were promiscuous, that's certain, it's normal over there.
With the coming of Subud – Wow! - they would hit their heads. Yes! There was one, one of these promiscuous people, who became quite professional, he became so skilled ( at beating himself up ). Whenever he did latihan he would bang his head against the wall so hard the mirror broke. Four thick mirrors were shattered, smashed by his head. Then he asked, 'Why is it, Pak? Why do I always bang my head?'
'Well, what is in it? What is inside it? - You used to do this, didn't you?'
'Oh, yes, Pak.'
'And now?'
'Oh, I would be afraid to do it now!'
'Ah, you see.'
So the law that manifests within man's being is the law of life. Bapak calls this the ruh ilafi ( Arab. ); it penetrates all of ( his being ). That is why it is said to be the king of all souls.
Even though all this is already clear, already appropriate and complete, so human beings can no longer avoid or lie to God about what they have done and experienced during their life, nevertheless God has willed and created another spirit, the ruh-al-qudus ( Arab. ). It is also a messenger like the ruh ilafi, but this one ( works from the ) outside.
So there is a law inside and a law outside. This is why sometimes our outer situation can be a warning for us. To illustrate this Bapak will give an example. A man arrives somewhere, wanting to go home to his own place the next day. That night he is robbed. All his things have gone, all his money has gone. He can't go home because he has no money and no clothes. He can't go home in his underpants, people would laugh. At that point he flies into a rage at the thief. If the thief was there he would beat him without mercy! And at that moment he may also feel that God is unjust, 'Why have I been robbed of everything?' After he is robbed, perhaps all day and all night he feels annoyed, even with God. But the next morning he gets the news that the express train he should have taken to go home has been derailed and all the passengers are dead. When he gets this news what does he say? 'God be praised! God has preserved my life. I suppose then, that God is OK? That is the law that is outside - the ruh-al-qudus.
Such is God's grace. Such is God's wisdom and greatness towards everything He has created. So it is not necessary to say 'thank you very much' ( terima kasih; literally: receive love ) ;just the fact that you exist means that you 'receive love'. Words are unnecessary. The nature of 'receive love' is that you receive it. If you don't receive the love you don't exist. That is part of the framework of life created by God.
You may ask, 'That's fine, Pak, but why does one person have trouble and another not?'
'Well, it's only an example. Nothing happens without a cause. There is always a cause.'
'Where does the cause come from? Does it come from God?' 'No, from the people themselves.'
Why are human beings created with desires, thinking minds and hearts if these are the cause of a human being's falling from his or her true level? Certainly that is not God's intention. For a human soul to be able to live here, enveloped by a physical body, a coarse body, it has to be provided with the necessary equipment. It's like someone going on a train or an airplane. If he isn't provided with money he cannot get on. He can hang on ( outside ), but eventually he will fall off. So you have to use the prerequisites that correspond to the place where you are. But then human beings forget ( their true nature ), because of the influence of their heart and their environment.
That's how it is. For example you have a nice house in Medan, then suddenly, somehow or other, you get a house here that is a hundred times better than the one in Medan. And you get a hundred times the salary - not a hundred times the food! That remains the same. You would probably feel, 'What do I need to go back to Medan for?' That's normal. It is usual for the heart to like what is nice.
( Or ), you ask for ten rupiahs and you are given ten. 'How good, how delightful it would be if I got a hundred!' You are given a hundred, you ask for a thousand. A thousand, you ask for two thousand. A million, however many millions, you still cannot stop. Like Rockefeller, for example, he was not satisfied, he kept on ( looking for money ).
That's how it is. Human beings are given a heart, desires and a thinking mind so they can be secure in this world and can work well here, but instead they are influenced by the conditions here. Automatically they become more influenced by the conditions of this world and forget all that they received before.
To illustrate, consider the example of a newborn baby. Those of you who have children certainly know what a baby is like when it is just born. One moment it laughs, another moment its face wrinkles up or it seems distressed, and another moment it is happy. Of course you will say, 'Oh, that's normal, Pak. That's how babies are.'
Nothing is 'normal'. There is certainly a reason ( for the baby's expressions ), only we don't know what it is. And why not? Because for some time we have been imagining heaven as if it is a place like Monte Carlo. That’s why! We can't figure it out, because if we wish to know the content of a baby who is still small, still less than two or three days old, we have to be able to understand ( heaven ).
This is what happens in Subud. Because in Subud when you start to do the latihan ( you go ), 'Ow-ow-ow-ow,' ( Bapak makes sounds like a baby ) yes, that's how it is. You sound and you look like a little child ( more sounds ) .What's that? ( Laughter ) Or sometimes 'A-o-a-o,' you can't even recite the alphabet. You may even resent it. 'Why can't I recite it? I can so say my ABC!' But the one who can is your heart - your soul can't do anything yet.
So there is certainly a reason for the expressions on a newborn baby's face. Clearly, he sees and feels things that grown-ups cannot know about, because he is closer to his soul than to the world. Then as days, weeks and months go by, he starts to see the shapes of this world and hear voices and so on, and what he experienced before he was influenced by this world begins to be submerged and disappear. The more he goes to school, the more he grows up - gets married, for example - that's it! ( Finally he will say ), 'Angels are something like those ladies in Paris.' ( He has strayed ) so far!
As Bapak said just now, if we want to know ourselves the way we really were before we were influenced by the world, we have to be able to experience how we were when we were still babies, which is what we are receiving in the latihan, the latihan of Subud. In the latihan we sometimes sound like a child crying. But the vessel has changed - before when it was still a baby it sounded like 'Weh-weh!' - now we are grown up it can't sound like that anymore - now it sounds like 'Ow-wow!' ( Laughter ) So the voice is different, but the crying is the same.
So we are now being trained by the power of God, by the Roh Ilofi Bapak just mentioned, which is the guide, the bringer of enlightenment, the messenger within the human self. We are starting to be scrubbed, to be cleaned, so that eventually, once we are cleaned... ( What is within you ) is being cleaned, you understand, not thrown away. No, because if it is thrown away it means we are dead. While we are still here we need all that, only it must be able to move over.
So when you need to make money, use the instruments that are specifically for the world - that is, the desires, the heart and the thinking. But to know heaven don't use your thinking. Don't, because you will go wrong. Your heaven will turn out to be Hong Kong. ( Laughter )
It seems it is already twelve o'clock, so Bapak will finish now. Later you will also be able to hear and read the talks Bapak gave abroad. Once again, Bapak prays that after he has left, not only will God bless you all with well-being and happiness, but that you will continue to worship God diligently, in accordance with the wish of your own soul - not your heart but your soul - so that your soul can play its rightful role in your life, in this world and in the hereafter. That is all, and Bapak says thank you. Praise be to God.
