The Boy Who Sought Wisdom

There once was a little boy who sought to be a very wise person. He went from his home and sat on a tall grassy hillside hoping to find a wonderful way to do this. After several hours in the dark he sang to himself to stay awake questioning what it meant to even be wise. The moon rose high and he found himself looking intensely at it as its light bathed him. In his heart he little boy wondered at the moon and thought it must surely by alive.

"Yes, of course I am." he heard inside himself astonished.

"Never once till now have you really seen my light and been glad of it.", said the moon. The boy said inside himself, then prove to me your alive Mr. Moon sir.

"OK, ask me something."

"Why do you go away when the sun is out?"

"I don't always. Sometimes in the summer you can see me for a good part of the day, true?"

The little boy thought to himself about the time he saw the moon after lunch. Yep it was true. Without being prompted the moon began again.

"If you could learn to pay less attention to your eyes you could even feel me during the daytime. Even the oceans do."

"Oh, said the boy, you are very wise, aren't you?"

"Some have said so", said the moon.

"Then tell me" said the boy, "how do I become one of the few with wisdom on the earth?"

"If you were a pebble my wisdom might totally satisfy you.", the moon replied. "Ask the walnut tree for though I am older, he is closer to your feelings. In fact you ate some of his children today before I rose up into the sky. That is my wisdom today for you."

How does one talk to a walnut tree wondered the boy. The little boy saw a walnut tree close by. He looked at it with an emptiness that was held very peacefully. He held no wish. A long time went by but the boy sat in the peace and quiet. In one instant he felt aware of the walnuts he ate earlier and was glad of it, for without them he would not have had the strength to climb the hill. He felt them dancing happily in his stomach and he heard

"They are happy to help you live."

"Oh said the boy, who are you?"

"I am the walnut tree."

" I didn't know your little ones had feelings, Mr. tree.

"Most of your kind are very unaware, the tree replied.

I guess thats true, Mr Tree sir"

"What would you like to know?" The boy asked,

"How do I become truly wise?"

"I will share my wisdom with you if you like. Part of it is this: to a blade of grass I might seem incredibly wise, but for your needs I would recommend another. Perhaps you should go see Mr. Cow. He is closer to your feelings than I am."

"Oh, said the boy, I didn't know."

"You'll see. Goodnight now then.

The boy didn't see any cow. Nothing to do but go home perhaps and come back tomorrow, thought the boy. Yet he continued to sit there for quite a long while feeling peaceful and nice. As he wondered if he had any desire to go anywhere he heard,

"We will help you go home if you really want to."

"Who said that?", the boy asked. The voice seemed to come from within his own heart, or maybe his stomach.

"Are you the walnuts again?"

"No, we are the hamburger you ate earlier and we like you and will help. What would you like?"

"I would like to know how to become one of the few truly wise." said the boy.

"Its true we are much more peaceful and harmonious than most of your kind. So if you would like we will share with you, But please remember to a jellyfish we might seem incredibly wise but please remember you are not a jellyfish. The wisdom of one of the truly wise humans is an extremely rare thing. Perhaps you should ask your mother, for she is even closer to your feelings than we are. That would be our advice to you little one and yet we leave it to you."

The boy thanked them and thought he would go home and see his mother in the morning. Yet once again he felt very peaceful He felt himself in such a heavenly state he could not move. A very long time went by but he had no sense to be aware of it. From his heart he heard his mother's voice,

"Who has summoned me from my dream?"

"I did not realize that I summoned you mother", said the boy. "Perhaps some part of me did it without realizing it. I want to know how to become truly wise."

"Oh", said his mother,
"to a little orphan girl I might seem to be the wisest person on the earth, but to be truly wise is quite a large order. Perhaps you should ask Adam, the first man and the grandfather of all."

"I will if you tell me where to find him. He must have lived a really long time ago."

"True, but do not forget he is a relative of everyone. "

The boy said thanks as he was wondering how he could meet Adam when even his great grandfather had not. As the boy sat there all doubts faded and he could not even feel his body he was in such bliss. Nor did he care if he met Adam or about wisdom or even living another day. The predawn arrived and the moon was waning. From the total quiet within him he heard,

" Son what would you like?"

"Are you Adam?"

"Yes, I am your greatest Grandfather. "

The boy forgot why he had wanted to see Adam. Adam said,

"You have forgotten why you wanted to see me, which is a good sign. A wish is not as good as giving up a wish."

The boy fell asleep and was taken on a journey through parts of his future life. But when it was over he felt inside "Thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks." From this he knew his destiny was a good one and the first step was to live it out while depending on the One Who is Truly Wise. He found himself asking to have this memory wiped out and to live out his life without any special fore knowledge.

Adam said to the boy's sleeping mother,
"He is fortunate." The moon, the trees, the animals praised the One. His mother awoke with a start. Desperately she tried to remember her dream without any success. The boy stumbled to his house from the hill. There was no recollection at all of the night before. The boy felt light and happy and did not want to pursue wisdom any more
