The Turbulent Saga Of Jacques/Mark And Grazia/Laura...!
Chapter 14
Laura's Brief... Happy Respite... In Her Beloved England... Is Marred By An Ominous Warning Dream... In London... Amidst Glorious Plans... For A Happy Future...!
Immediately after arriving in London... Laura made contact with Philip's business associate... whom she instantly disliked... because he treated her... like she was one of Philip's casual girlfriends... to be passed around... amongst his friends...!
But nevertheless... very grateful... for the precious Work Permit form... he handed to her... which Philip... as promised... had obtained for her... through his connections... before going back to South Africa...
And she suddenly recalled seeing him... at the Johannesburg airport... tenderly embracing... a lovely young woman...!
And it dawned on her... in the company... of his obnoxious friend... that she must be Philip's girlfriend...!
And newly named Laura... felt much too ashamed... for having trusted Philip... and too proud... to make contact... with SUBUD London... for their help...
If she had... she might have been reunited... with her beloved soulmate Richard... again... who happened to be in London... from South Africa... on business... at the time... newly married to a Southern Rhodesian woman... whom he had met... at an art gallery... and who had left her husband... and three children... to be with him...!
So on her own... familiar with London... from her student days... she found a reasonably priced hotel... very glad for the $1,000... that Alfred had given her... and sent a letter off to them... giving them her London address...
Soon after... Laura experienced a waking Dawn Dream... where she saw a feminine hand... on which there was a beautiful... diamond engagement ring... being ominously thrust at her... for her to forbid... being worn... by the owner of the hand...!
And since... in her Dream... she knew that she had left him... a third time... becoming annoyed... she had pushed the hand away from her... in disgust... indicating that she wanted to have nothing more to do... with what was going on... or was about... to go on... in emotionally fractured... Mark's life...!
And Laura "knew"... upon awakening... that Mark had put a diamond ring... probably bought with her money... on the finger... of a new woman... in his life... or was about to...!
And she felt cheapened... all over again... because neither Jacques... nor her previous two husbands... had ever given her an engagement ring of diamonds... her birthstone... or of any other stone...!
She was happily back... in her beloved England... where she had been a student... at the Kensington Secretarial College For Girls... when she was seventeen...
The land where she felt... so much at home... now knowing that English blood... also flowed in her veins... and looking very much forward... to a happy new life there... already having handed in her Work Permit form... at the Labor Department... and enquiring about permanent citizenship...
She was told... that after only six months domicile... she would be able to apply for citizenship... and she hoped... that once she was established... and settled... she would try to make contact... with her real father... Arthur Cannon... for the very first time...!
Laura's brief stay... in London... had been very expensive...!
She had had a brief... happy reunion... with an old friend... who had been a guest... at the Hotel Residensie... in Pretoria... when she was married to René...
He had been the only stunt man... for the exciting adventure movie... "The Guns of Navarone..." ... with each dangerous scene... getting only one take...! (#581 of the Little Cilandak Video Library...)
And Philip Philbin... had eventually returned from South Africa... some weeks later... and immediately contacted Laura... who had informed his obnoxious business associate... of her current whereabouts...
Simply because she felt that she needed to thank Philip... in person... for having obtained the precious Work Permit Form... for her... so opportunely...
Otherwise... she may have had to wait for months... or even years... to obtain one...!
For there was a very long waiting list... of refugees... from all over the world... desirous of becoming British citizens...!
And when she shyly asked Philip... one day... when she was going to meet his wife... reminding him of his offer... on the long plane flight... that she could stay with them... until she got settled... he dropped a bombshell on her...
By confessing...
that he had fallen madly in love with her... on the long plane flight... from Johannesburg... and couldn't keep her out of his mind... all the time he was away... from England...!
And he longed for the day... when he would be reunited with her... back home... hoping that she also felt the same way... about him...!
Philip had already helped her... to get much better accommodation... in a country inn... where the rates... were much cheaper... than in sky high London... for which she was very grateful to him...
But she drew the line... at any intimacy with him... even though she was almost broke... while he kept hinting... that they should live together... get a nice flat... in London...!
Gently reminding her... with his heart of love... in his gentle... grey-blue eyes... that without a Work Permit... she could not get any job... could not be gainfully employed... anywhere in England...
Ironically... she could not touch the $20,000... in the special Savings Account... kindly set up for her... by her best friends... Alfred and Nieves Davis... in their bank... in the USA... not for ten years... when she was expected to pay them back... the original $10,000... they had trustingly loaned her...
And in despair... over her dire circumstances... she was just about to give in... to her dear friend Philip... who had been so courteous... and kind... and helpful... and polite towards her... seriously considering becoming... his London town girlfriend... with all her needs... being looked after... by him... at least until she was able to earn a living... on her own... in hopefully six months time...
When... just in the nick of time... Ruth White's opportune letter arrived...!
